Frequently Asked Questions

Who is my adviser?

  • If you have not completed Calculus I, then you are advised by the Freshman Engineering Program (FEP). If you are not taking an ENGR course, visit 276 Hardaway Hall for details on the advising process.
  • If you are in Calculus II or beyond, then you are advised within your academic department unless your major is UDEG (undesignated engineering). Visit your major department for advising instructions.
  • If you are an UDEG (undesignated engineering) major, then you are advised by the Freshman Engineering Program regardless of where you are in mathematics. Visit 276 Hardaway Hall for details on the advising process.

Can I register without seeing an adviser?
No, you must see an adviser in order to register. The adviser will clear you to register in myBama.

How does the advising process work?

  • Figure out where you are currently in your program: major, courses taken, next courses in the sequence, etc.
  • Identify what courses you should take in the next semester by reviewing your major departmental flowcharts.
  • Use DegreeWorks to build a schedule.
  • Meet with an adviser. Your adviser will check your plan for the next semester and clear you to register.
  • Register during your assigned time.

What is DegreeWorks? Do we have to use it?

  • DegreeWorks is the UA system for student educational planning. All students being advised through the Freshman Engineering Program must use DegreeWorks.
  • If your engineering major is listed incorrectly or if you have chosen a new engineering major, then you need to visit Engineering Student Services in 250 H. M. Comer Hall to file a Change of Major form in order for the correct courses to show up in Degree Works.
  • If your first semester was not Fall 2010, then you need to visit Engineering Student Services in 250 H. M. Comer Hall to file for an update to your UA Catalog in order for the correct courses to show up in Degree Works.

What if I have never used DegreeWorks?

  • Log into myBama; go to the Students tab; click on DegreeWorks.
  • Watch the videos for additional helpful information.
  • Visit the student view audit, the student educational planner, the “what if” section, GPA calculators and “look ahead” features.

How do I find out information on what classes I need to be taking?

I was given a permit for a class. How do I register for that class now that I have a permit?

  • The myBama system knows you are eligible for the class. You simply need to register for it.
  • Log into myBama and click “Add and Drop Classes” in the Registration tool box.
  • Scroll to the bottom and type in the 5-digit CRN number for the course, then click on “Submit Changes.” You should now be enrolled.

I want to take some courses at a different university this summer. How do I know that they will transfer?

  • Make sure that the course will transfer before you enroll for the course.
  • You need to generate a “Transient Letter” for the course that you are taking.
    • To generate this letter:
    • Login to myBama and click the “Student” tab.
    • Select the “Student Services” Folder, then the “Student Records” folder, then “Letter of Transiency.”
    • Select the term you will be taking the class(es), the name of the institution and the state where it is located.
    • Verify the school’s address that is generated by the system, then click “Select Transfer Courses.”
    • Select the courses you will be taking, and then click “Continue.” If you can’t find the courses you want to take, click “Courses Not Found” and fill out a form listing these classes. This form will be sent to the UA Registrar’s Office for evaluation of the courses in question.
    • Verify the information presented, then click “Generate Letter of Transiency.” The system will generate a PDF file that you can either save electronically or print.
