With 44 years of experience in the mining business, James “Mike” Tracy has spent the majority of his career with Drummond Company holding positions in both engineering and operations management.

A Tuscaloosa native, Tracy graduated from Holt High School in 1969, and in 1973, he received a degree in mineral engineering from The University of Alabama. After graduation, Tracy started his professional career as a mining engineer in Birmingham working for Southern Company in the fuels department.

He later joined Drummond Company Inc., and worked as a third-shift foreman at the Kellerman Mining Complex. Tracy moved through the ranks at Drummond to positions such as chief engineer and director of operations development. During this time, he earned his Master of Business Administration from UA in 1986.

At Drummond, Tracy joined the development team for the company’s Colombian coal mining project and helped lay the groundwork for the 35 million ton per year complex, which is one of the largest mining complexes in the world. He became president of the division in 1990. He later took on the roles of corporate vice president and executive assistant to the CEO in 1998 and president of the mining division in 2004.

In 2007, Tracy started working for a startup energy company in southern Illinois called White Oak Resources, LLC. As CEO, he worked with a team of coal experts and amassed an underground coal reserve approaching 2 billion tons along with substantial gas and other mineral and mining rights.

Tracy resumed his position at Drummond in 2010, and took on additional responsibilities covering senior management of human resources, supply chain management and oversight of several other company subsidiaries. Since July 2016, Tracy has served as chief executive officer and board member of Drummond. He is responsible for the entire company and its affiliates.

At various times throughout his career, he has been a board member for the Alabama Coal Association, the National Mining Association, the Birmingham Business Alliance, the Business Council of Alabama, the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama, and the Joint US-Colombian Chamber of Commerce. Tracy is also a member of Coal Executive Clubs-King Coal, the Old Timers Society and is a registered professional engineer.

He was awarded Outstanding Young Man of America in 1977. In 2000, he was named Honored Professional, Who’s Who in Executives and Businesses.

Tracy lives in Vestavia, Alabama, with his wife Becky. The couple have three daughters — Jennifer, Julie and Kathryn — and seven grandchildren.
