Dr. Yuqi Zhou’s overall research goal is to bridge the gap between the physical and digital worlds by advancing extended reality (XR) and human-computer interaction (HCI). He is primarily concerned with making virtual environments as tangible, intuitive, and immersive as physical ones. As such, his research focuses on developing, measuring, and improving novel haptic feedback systems—specifically Encountered-Type Haptic Devices—to provide realistic, versatile, and safe interactions in virtual reality. By combining mechatronic hardware design with physical and virtual redirection algorithms, this research allows users to seamlessly touch and interact with complex, dynamic virtual objects while ensuring perceptually aligned and safe haptic responses.
Zhou’s specific research interests focus on XR haptics and distributed cloud VR architectures, and collaborative augmented reality. He designs advanced control algorithms to solve complex spatial synchronization challenges. He has published his research in high-profile venues, including IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics (TVCG), IEEE Conference on Virtual Reality and 3D User Interfaces (VR) and IEEE International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality (ISMAR).
