Dr. Armen Amirkhanian’s research interests are broadly based in infrastructure materials characterization with a primary focus on cementitious materials and geotechnical applications. Past research has been on emerging concrete pavement topics such as two-lift paving and internal curing. Current research topics are exploring the areas of alkali-silica degradation characterization, atomic-scale characterization of alkali-activated materials, and durability issues associated with concrete materials. He has previously performed extensive geotechnical investigations of novel stabilization techniques for both DOT and private industry sponsors. Dr. Amirkhanian has been principal investigator or co-PI on projects with the Oregon, Alabama, South Carolina and Maryland Departments of Transportation as well as NSF and private sponsors. He is a professional engineer registered in Oregon, Alabama, and South Carolina.
Dr. Amirkhanian is a voting member on American Concrete Institute committees 124, 213, and S802 and an associate member of ACI committees 325 and 327. He is also a voting member of TRB standing committee AKP020 and the secretary and treasurer of the International Society of Concrete Pavements. Dr. Amirkhanian is the faculty advisor for the ASCE Concrete Canoe Team and the UA student chapter of ACI.
