Dr. Moynihan joined UA in 1990 after 12 years of industry experience. He received his B.S. and M.B.A. from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and his Ph.D. from the University of Central Florida. He was promoted to Professor in 2001, served as Interim Department Head (2021-2022) and served as Associate Department Head (2019-2021).
Dr. Moynihan co-founded and served as Assistant Director of the Alabama Industrial Assessment Center, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (2016-2019), to assist manufacturing facilities in energy cost reduction, productivity improvement, waste minimization and pollution prevention. He served as PI or Co-PI for more than $4.9 million in funded research supported by NASA, the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command, the Federal Aviation Administration, BellSouth Telecommunications, Mercedes-Benz and the foundry industry. Moynihan has authored nearly 200 articles in books, journals and conference proceedings, and has five software copyrights.
Prior to joining UA, Dr. Moynihan was employed by Martin Marietta Orlando Aerospace, where he was a manufacturing engineer, industrial engineer and a systems analyst for a variety of company programs, including missile defense and fixed wing/rotorcraft avionics. He has also held production supervisor positions in the computer and chemical processing industries.
