  • Ph.D., Ceramic Engineering, Missouri University of Science and Technology, 2020

Dr. Rachel Cook is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at the University of Alabama. Before joining the College of Engineering’s faculty in January 2025, she was a National Research Council postdoctoral fellow at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, MD. Dr. Cook received her B.S. and Ph.D. in Ceramic Engineering from Alfred University and Missouri University of Science and Technology, respectively.

Dr. Cook researches sustainable and resilient materials for infrastructure, focusing on the interconnectedness of composition, processing, structure, and properties in advanced cement systems. Her work examines how chemical changes affect the microstructure and performance of both blended and pure-phase cementitious systems, encompassing traditional, emerging alternative, and novel binders. Additionally, Dr. Cook investigates how local materials can be utilized in both conventional and extreme (e.g., extraterrestrial) environments. She also incorporates recycled materials to promote circular economy practices and reduce landfill waste, aiming to develop cost-effective, durable infrastructure solutions.
