The Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering program at the University of Alabama is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, https://www.abet.org, under the General Criteria and Program Criteria for Environmental and similarly named Engineering Programs.

Environmental engineers use the principles of engineering, geological science, biology, physics and chemistry to develop solutions to today’s environmental problems.

Environmental engineers improve methods and policies for recycling, waste disposal, public health, control of water and air pollution along with natural resource management.

Job growth for environmental engineering is expected to grow 22 percent by 2020, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

General Advising

The College of Engineering Academic Advising Center helps students plan their path to a degree. Advising appointments are required for semester and long term course planning, discussing or changing a major or minor along with extended discussion of these or other advising questions.

Program Educational Objectives – Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering

The educational objectives of The University of Alabama’s Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering program are to have graduates who are in demand and, within a few years of graduation, leading fulfilling professional careers, in their chosen area of professional practice, through their demonstrated abilities to:

  1. Apply knowledge, sound judgment, and technical skills to design, engineer, and implement sustainable solutions to problems.
  2. Expand their knowledge of current and emerging issues to meet evolving challenges facing society with a strong commitment to career-long professional development and lifelong learning.
  3. Exhibit ethical behavior, effective interpersonal and communication skills, and professional accountability in all career endeavors.

Students, upon completion of the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering program, will have:

  1. An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
  2. An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.
  3. An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
  4. An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.
  5. An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.
  6. An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.
  7. An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
