From Science to Service: The USGS Hydrologic Instrumentation Facility and Opportunities for the Next Generation

Presented by: Dr. Derek Bussan from United States Department of Interior, U.S. Geological Survey, Hydrologic Instrumentation Facility (HIF)

Date: September 23, 2026

Time:  2:00 pm

Location:  SERC 1059

Abstract:

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has played a central role in understanding and observing the Nation’s natural resources for nearly 150 years. Today, that mission increasingly depends on innovative technologies, interdisciplinary partnerships, and the development of the next generation of scientists and engineers.

This seminar will introduce the USGS, provide perspective on Dr. Derek Bussan’s professional journey to federal scientific leadership, and highlight the work of the USGS Hydrologic Instrumentation Facility (HIF) in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The HIF serves as a national capability supporting hydrologic instrumentation, technology evaluation, quality assurance, research, training, and operational support for water-observing programs throughout the United States.

The presentation will explore the HIF’s specialized research and testing capabilities and its work with sensors, telemetry systems, autonomous platforms, and next-generation water-observing technologies. It will also highlight the opportunities created by the HIF’s location in Tuscaloosa to connect federal science with university researchers, students, and industry partners.

Particular attention will be given to workforce development and technology engagement through initiatives such as the Future Leaders in Observation of Water (FLOW) Academy and the Water Observing Technology Forum (WOTF). The seminar will conclude with a discussion of opportunities for students, faculty, researchers, and partners to engage with the HIF and contribute to the future of water observation, instrumentation, research, and technology.

Bio:

Dr. Derek D. Bussan is Chief of the U.S. Geological Survey Hydrologic Instrumentation Facility (HIF) in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The HIF serves as a national capability for hydrologic instrumentation, technology evaluation, quality assurance, research, training, and operational support for USGS water-observing programs. Dr. Bussan leads efforts to expand the HIF’s role in research, technology innovation, workforce development, and collaboration with universities, federal agencies, industry, and students. He is particularly interested in creating opportunities that connect science and engineering with real-world water-observation challenges and in developing the next generation of scientists and engineers.
