Dr. Lorena Perez joined the Metallurgical and Materials Engineering department at the University of Alabama in August 2020 as a postdoctoral researcher. After one year, she was promoted to Associate Research Professional. She performs research on the correlation of processing (cold spray, laser-assisted cold spray), microstructure (grain size, precipitates), and mechanical properties (strength, ductility) of metallic materials (aluminum alloys and nickel-based superalloys) for repair applications.
She works on research projects funded by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) to evaluate cold spray and laser-assisted cold spray as a repair technique.
She runs the Alabama Atomization Facility where she processes metallic powders (aluminum alloys, steel alloys, nickel-based alloys, copper alloys, and high entropy alloys) by gas atomization used for additive manufacturing and thermal spray technologies.
Dr.Perez´s research interests are focused on the development of new alloys for additive manufacturing.
